Is life unfair?

July 12, 2006

By Croft M. Pentz

Everyone faces problems, trouble, loss and sometimes tragedy. Both the Christian and non-Christian face these situations. During these times, we are tempted to say, “Life isn’t fair.”

God is sovereign. He is over all. God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, and His ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8, 9). God doesn’t send pain, trouble and setbacks, but He permits them.

God created you (Genesis 1:27) and understands you. While you were in your mother’s womb, God knew you (Jeremiah 1:5).

Jesus spoke of God’s impartiality (Matthew 5:45). God sends rain upon the Christian as well as the unbeliever. Both rain and sunshine are needed to have a rainbow.

Both the righteous and unrighteous become ill. Both the godly and ungodly can have a short lifespan.

What we think of as life being unfair, God may be using to get our attention. If we don’t respond when everything goes well, He may have to use circumstances we think are unfair.

The key to dealing with such times is to allow God to take what you feel is unfair to draw you close to Him. God understands your circumstances.
