Red licorice and other marriage helps
SPRINGFIELD, MO. — My taste buds learned to love red licorice long before I memorized the ABCs in kindergarten. Black licorice was good, but the red sticks were addictive. It was impossible for a 5-year-old to eat just one, so I often had a stash under my pillow.
Little did I know the candy would one day play a significant role in my marriage.
Like most newlyweds Doree and I had our share of challenges and adjustments. We were endeavoring to eke out a living, launch the Convoy of Hope ministry, and figure out our place in the world.
But Doree learned a secret early in our marriage: No matter how difficult the situation appeared, she could bring a smile to my face with a package of red licorice and a reassuring hug.
After 21 years of marriage and four daughters, it now seems simplistic to say that candy enriched our marriage. But it did. Doree refused to allow me to bask in despair. Instead, with the help of red licorice and a few verses of Scripture, she lifted my spirits, restored my hope, and fattened my waistline all at the same time.
In turn, I discovered that I could brighten her day and lighten her load with a cup of herbal tea and a back rub.
In a world where Satan wages war against marriages and other relationships by sewing seeds of discouragement, we have the opportunity to fight back with acts of kindness and words of hope. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can be agents of comfort for our spouses and see tears give way to joy.
The next time your spouse is discouraged, simply ask the Holy Spirit what you can do to say, “God is with you — you’re going to make it.”
